Greeting by Mayor László Király

Dear reader, dear visitor to Deszk!

As the mayor of the municipality, on behalf of all the residents of Deszk, I am proud to welcome you with this publication showcasing the values of our municipality.

The Hungarikum Act of 2012 gradually brought to life county and local value repositories, which have collected and highlighted the rich treasures of our country. In this context, the Deszk Local Values Committee was established, and in cooperation with this committee, the collection of local values began. Their task was not a difficult one, as for three decades, dozens of us have worked to dust off, preserve, document, and present our rich cultural life, our wonderful heritage, and the imprints of our past in all their glory to the residents of Deszk and the visitors to our village.

This publication reflects the state of affairs in 2025, bringing to life the treasures of Deszk that have been cataloged, researched, and documented so far. Most of them have already been included as local treasures, but there will certainly be more that are waiting to be discovered and will be included in future publications in the years to come. The rich array of values presented here can never be considered complete. In the future, new generations will undoubtedly uncover old objects and intangible treasures that will rightfully claim their place on this list. As such, it will never be truly complete, nor can it be, but perhaps we can offer you a small glimpse into why we, the people living here at the beginning of the 21st century, see this beautiful, ever-evolving village, just 3 km from Szeged, as something special – our small homeland, Deszk.

These pictures hold more meaning for us than they may for those who see them for the first time. Behind the photos, our eyes see the stories we heard from our grandmothers in childhood, families and faces from the present and long forgotten, smiling encounters, developments that have beautified our village, unforgettable events, the achievements of our children and teams, and the joy of everyday, hard work together. I hope that as you read our words and immerse yourself in the beauty and message of the photos, you too will discover a lovable Deszk within them!

With these thoughts in mind, I present this publication to your kind attention. It is about Deszk, the people of Deszk, and the village we love – a village we have shaped together over the past 535 years. We are well aware that we are not a tourist destination, but we are certain that if you visit us and uncover these values, Deszk will surely find a place in your heart!
